Be very careful about your personal cars and any form of transport when moving to live in Mallorca.  You can, of course, bring your car with you from the UK for any short stay and up to 6 months. During this time your car must have a current MOT, tax and all normal legal requirements. You are also required to have your driving licence with you at all times when driving.

Should you decide to become a Spanish resident or stay longer than 6 months then your plates will need to be changed to either Spanish plates, which is permanent, or tourist plates, which will need renewing yearly.  This change over can be extremely costly and is worked out on the age of your car - it is a bit like paying tax on it all over again.  I know I paid over 1000 euros to have my car changed over - it was 8 years old at the time - which I thought was rather expensive.  The costs will depend upon the age and make of the car and, of course, the value of the car.  If you are going to stay then you will need to address this - they are quite prolific on looking out for foreign registered cars. Should they catch you they will fine you, confiscate your car and you will only get it back upon payment of re-registering your car onto Spanish plates. Bare this in mind when thinking about bringing your car with you when moving permanently. This is a complicated process and it is advisable to use the services of a professional, someone who has experience in this process.

Should you wish to purchase a Spanish plated car you must have an N.I.E. number. The car must be transferred into your name. Again it is advisable to get help from a professional, who will assist you and check that there are no outstanding fines on the car. Unlike in the UK outstanding fines and debts to not stay with the previous owner of the car, they transfer themselves onto the next owner - they go with the car - so please be careful when buying any secondhand vehicles, use reputable companies and do not pay for any car until the legal transfer has been made, or you could find yourself with huge problems.

There are several companies who deal with this sort of thing on a regular basis as well as companies for removal, storage, mechanics and other car related services on this island.

There is also quite a selection of companies either based in Mallorca or travelling to Mallorca regularly who can arrange the removal of furniture and personal items, even cars and larger items.

The removal company of your choice will normally be able to provide you with boxes and packaging materials. It is advisable to use a removal company which has a local office in Mallorca in case of any problems, which can occur when dealing with Spanish bureaucracy.

Storage is available on either a temporary or more permanent basis all in secure premises. Storage by container is also a possibility. This can alleviate any problems between you and your belongings arriving at different times - sometimes you will need to store your belongings here whilst you finalise things at home!
